The assignment was to follow along with the assigned videos and draw the same things as them. They were just plain cubes, a city with buildings and trees, and finally a room.
Final Drawing and Reflection1. I first sketched all my ideas into a small sketchbook to see which one I liked the best. I knew immediately that the sketch of the sewing drawer would work the best out of all 3 of my ideas. 2. The other two didn't have as good of a composition, and it really made a difference. There was just the right amount of variety within cohesiveness in the sewing drawer sketch. The other two were either too boring or too complicated. 3. I used a reference photo that I took to get the values correct. 4. I also used a while variety of pencil shades to get the depth that it needed to look realistic. It was hard to make the shadows so dark, I was afraid that if I messed up and had to erase that my mistake would still be noticeable. 5. I like how my piece was crafted, except for some blending inconsistencies. My paper stumps are old and don't work that well anymore, so in some areas it was almost impossible to get the pencil to be smooth. It was also hard to get the lines to be so straight. I struggle with drawing things with boxy shapes, like building and furniture, so I'm surprised that I was successful at it on this piece. 6. Learning composition was extremely helpful for choosing which sketch I would continue. 7. I think this was a huge step for me in terms of practicing realism. I had never really tried something like this before and to see that I completed it successfully was a great confidence booster. 8. I struggled a lot with this drawing. I had a big time issue at first; it took me about 2 hours to complete the first row. But eventually I realized that this was because I kept getting distracted or just moved very slow. I did the other 4 rows and the final touches in about 3 hours after limiting my distractions and not letting myself get too sidetracked. Reference and In Progress PhotosThe task was to complete a chart and to use this chart to correctly add value to shapes, making them look 3D.
For the day two assignment I drew a flower and a homemade pot with a face on it. There are parts of the flower I wish I spent more time on, such as some of the petals. I like how the textures came out on the pot, it really looks like the actual pot.
This assignment was to practice contour in drawing. I like how the hand and pen came out, but the lightbulb and the white out aren't my favorite. I redrew the lightbulb so many times I ran out of paper, so I had to use the one that wasn't the worst.
Practice photos: I took three photos describing the beginning of the virtual school year. I wanted everyone to be able to relate, so I chose areas that students would see in normal school: a classroom, a cafeteria, and a gymnasium. All the images compare the real place to it's online school equivalent.
I wanted to capture the loneliness of online school, so most of the pictures are in black and white and void of people; however, on the computer screen in each photo is a colorful picture that has people in it. I wanted my photos to include a personal touch, so I used pictures from Apex High School on the computer screen (from Clark Nexsen). I wanted to make the computer stand out a bit in each photo, so I changed the values so it would appear darker. I also edited the images on the computer screen to appear lighter. In each photo, I wanted to place emphasis on the computer screen, which is partly why they are in color when the rest of the image is not. I find photos with symmetry to be very appealing, yet simple. But I also realize some may find them boring, so I refrained from using symmetry in all my photos. In the cafeteria and gymnasium photos, I used the rule of thirds. This was difficult, as I didn't want the computer to take up the whole picture; likewise, I didn't want the background to take up too much space. I was inspired by the beautiful photos on www.clarknexsen.com/project/apex-high-school/ of Apex High. It reminded me of how much I miss seeing people every day. This is also what inspired me to color the images the way I did; to emphasize that school just isn't the same at home. I think the comparison I'm trying to make is mostly evident in my photos. I also think the symmetry in the first image is successful. I'm not as sure about the rule of thirds in the second and third ones, I think it may need to be cropped a little better. This assignment helped me learn that photography is a difficult job, and I commend those who do it professionally. I also learned a lot about composition and how I should arrange the subject of my art to better please the eye. This assignment is for the teacher to gain an understanding of what I know about art and how I apply the techniques. I believe I did the best I could for all of them except the perspective drawing. I struggled with it and couldn't do my very best because I was running out of time to complete it. I don't know what it would've looked like if I had spent more time on it, as perspective isn't my forte. I have also done better pencil portraits in the past, but it's been a while and I guess I'm out of practice.
