What medium was your favorite to work with?
My favorite medium to work with was graphite pencil.
I did this drawing around May of 2020. It's still one of my favorite drawing that I've done but I can point out some mistakes that I've improved upon. For example, there are many streaky parts where I did not blend the pencil well enough. The hat is streaky, under the chin, the shadow of the hat, and the shirt are all this way.
I also didn't take enough time to really flesh out all the details. Like the tattoo on the singers chest; I just guessed where to put the images and didn't take the time to actually draw them correctly. In general I feel I could've fleshed out his facial features a bit more but it's the blending that I didn't do the best on. |
This drawing is from September of 2020 in Art 2. This drawing shows my improvement in graphite because of the blending, attention to detail and range of values. While there are still some streaky spots, most noticeably around the edges, they don't stand out quite like they do in my first graphite drawing. I used blenders more frequently and didn't try to make things too dark too quick, which I think helped my improvement immensely.
Another thing I improved upon was the contrast and range of values. It's kind of hard to differentiate the features of the first drawing, but in this one the enhanced dark and light values makes it clear that the spools don't blend together. Additionally, I feel that this drawing has more attention to detail. I tried to include every loose needle, thread, and ribbon in the sewing box. Also, the higher contrast and range of values helps you see the details better than in my first example. I liked the way most of my projects came out this year, but the Unseen Things project was definitely my favorite. I love how this drawing looks and I'm really happy with my improvements. |
